Is the Hero Booster mandatory to progress in this game? And a few noob questions.

Basically, I'm already struggling with low level dungeons even though I'm at the same level as them, and this is when using the Astrub Knight and Trank helpers. I also haven't been able to find any other players who are also doing these dungeons or who could help. Using multiple characters with the Hero Booster purchase makes it seem like it would be possible.

Does this trend carry on throughout the entire game?
Can one person beat most content if they use the booster to use 3 characters at a time?
