It's currently impossible to launch the game via Steam. "Update required please restart the game" is the reason.
However there is no update. Neither Steam nor the launcher try to download anything. "Everything is up to date", version 1.4.0.8537 according to the launcher.
Perhaps stand-alone version doesn't have the issue, but I don't have it installed(and don't intend to).

Clawer Tonkino says "End of Turn: Suffers 1 or 2 damage". But instead, this effect is applied at the beginning of player's turn.
